The glaze is the base the staining is applied over, and it is needed on every restoration no matter how much characterisation it is to have. Since the stain pastes carry glaze components themselves, a single firing is then enough for the whole step. The thickness decides the result — applied correctly it gives the shades depth and a surface that needs no polishing.
